Carrying legacy across the skies: The journey of the ‘Ahu‘ula to Kona

Some shipments entrusted to United Cargo carry the weight of history and their significance goes well beyond any material value. One such valuable artifact is the feathered cape worn by Chief Kekuaokalani during the Battle of Kuamo’o in 1819, which United Cargo reunited with its people in Hawaii following meticulous and culturally sensitive logistics planning.

United Cargo successfully transported a rare and culturally significant Hawaiian feathered cape (‘ahu ‘ula) from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., back to its homeland in Kona, Hawaii, marking an important milestone in ongoing repatriation efforts under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. Dating back to the early 19th century, the ‘ahu ‘ula was worn by Chief Keaoua Kekuaokalani when he lost his life in the Battle of Kuamoʻo in 1819. It is therefore of deep historical importance for the people of Hawaii.

The delicate shipment, entrusted to United Cargo in May 2025, required a highly specialized logistics solution. Cultural protocol dictated that the ‘ahu ‘ula had to be transported directly to Kona on Hawaii Island, without any inter-island transfer. United Cargo was uniquely positioned to honor the protocol, offering the only viable routing that combined seamless connectivity with expert handling capabilities and cultural sensitivity. The shipment traveled from Washington Dulles International Airport via Denver, continuing directly to Kona – an uncommon routing that eliminated additional handling and minimized risk.

“We happened to have the perfect routing at the time – it fitted exactly what was needed,” said Ben Scott, Cargo Sales Account Executive at United Airlines. “For protocol reasons, it was important for the shipment to go directly to Kona rather than through Honolulu.”

This unique artifact was transported using United Cargo’s UASecure service, designed for high-value and sensitive shipments. The solution integrates secure handling protocols, real-time coordination, and specialized expertise to ensure maximum protection throughout the transport process. “UASecure was developed to manage what cannot be replaced. It is designed for moments exactly like this – when precision, protection, and reliability are non-negotiable,” Scott underlined. From origin to destination, the shipment was managed with the ultimate care, minimizing touchpoints and maintaining full control at every stage of the journey. The United Cargo team worked closely with all stakeholders to deliver a tailored solution that acknowledged and respected the cultural importance of the cargo.

“This wasn’t just another shipment,” Scott added. “It was about returning a piece of history to where it belongs. Being part of that was incredibly meaningful. It reminded us that, at United Cargo, we don’t just carry cargo, we connect cultures and communities. Every shipment tells a story.”
