Carrying legacy across the skies: The journey of the ‘Ahu‘ula to Kona

One such valuable artifact is the feathered cape worn by Chief Kekuaokalani during the Battle of Kuamo’o in 1819, which United Cargo reunited with its people in Hawaii following meticulous and culturally sensitive logistics planning.
United Cargo successfully transported a rare and culturally significant Hawaiian feathered cape (‘ahu ‘ula) from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., back to its homeland in Kona, Hawaii, marking an important milestone in ongoing repatriation efforts under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. Dating back to the early 19th century, the ‘ahu ‘ula was worn by Chief Keaoua Kekuaokalani when he lost his life in the Battle of Kuamoʻo in 1819. It is therefore of deep historical importance for the people of Hawaii.
The delicate shipment, entrusted to United Cargo in May 2025, required a highly specialized logistics solution. Cultural protocol dictated that the ‘ahu ‘ula had to be transported directly to Kona on Hawaii Island, without any inter-island transfer.
